The Rooftop Man

I saw a man up on the roof
A thousand miles away
He may have served some purpose there
But for what I couldn’t say

A welcome breeze upon my face
Awakes me from my daze
I’d lost my self in my own mind
A never-ending maze

I know he keeps his tabs on me
A tarnished dossier
All marked up with blood and ink
Of my earlier days

Sometimes I feel I’m weightless
Like a Novikoff ballet
But in the forest of my dreams
The rooftop man holds sway

To the darkest corners of the world
I’ve traveled just to prey
Between my sixth sense and ignorance
Love couldn’t last a day

Once I tried to undo time
But became lost in this dismay
He sheltered me then turned me out
All without delay

Thus is how I came to be
A life in disarray
Without a thing to feel or think
Besides this vile haze

I owe nothing to anyone
Doch, I feel I must rephrase
But I will not speak it in this house
For he does not like clichés

To find an egress in this place
Becomes harder every day
This brutal prison of time and space
An eternal judgment day

Eventually he’ll find me
And the dream will fall away
If I cannot look him in the eye
There’ll sure be hell to pay
